BET+ - Kid’s Profiles
The Problem
In response to our customers wanting more diversified content options on the BET+ app, the team planned to launch the option to add kid’s profiles, or Kid's Mode, within the app. As a mom, I was really excited about this initiative and ready to jump in.
My Goals
The biggest consideration for adding a Kids Mode profile, was to ensure safety and meet the legal requirements for younger subscribers. We needed to be very intentional with updating the 'Create Profile' flow to include the creation of a Kids Profile as well has how users navigate between Adult and Kids profiles.
Discovery
Acceptance Criteria
After receiving the request, I took note of the acceptance criteria for delivery:
Users can create a Kids Profile
It is mandatory to create a PIN number when creating a Kids Mode profile
User had to enter their BET+ Account password to create a PIN
PIN entry is required to exit a Kids Mode profile
Competitive Analysis
Ready to begin Discovery, I collected a list of of other kids content providers to conduct a competitive analysis to review other platforms' features. There were the brands I reviewed:
Key Findings:
Character Carousels & Dedicated Pages: Popular characters are highlighted in a sub navigation, clicking on a character icon leads user to a dedicated page for that character's content.
Parental Pin: pin entry required to exit kid's profile. Can toggle Pin feature on and off.
Age/rating filter selection
Search feature can be toggled on or off
Special labels or icon options of kid's profiles
Simplified navigation within kid's profile
Simplified player for kid's profile
Exploration & Refinement
After collecting insights from peer platforms, I began to explore our own Kids Mode profile creation experience. I created a user flow with wireframes of the anticipated steps and potential copy. After validating the flow with our internal stakeholders, I created refined, high-fidelity mockups as our brand team built out the BET+ kids brand. Once the brand team delivered the new assets, I applied the new branding to the mockups. After a final review with stakeholders, I created a spec file for our development team that included use cases for all our platform types: Web, Native mobile, and CTV.
